How to Lower Your Risk
Prevention starts with understanding the risks. Tobacco and alcohol are two of the most important risk factors, and the risk is higher when both are used together. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is also linked to some mouth and throat cancers, and sun exposure can increase the risk of cancer on the lips.
Do not smoke or use tobacco products. Smoking, vaping, cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco can all increase oral cancer risk.
Limit alcohol intake. Heavy alcohol use increases risk of cancers of the mouth and throat. Combined with tobacco, the risk rises even more.
Ask about HPV prevention. Vaccination helps prevent infections from HPV types that can cause several cancers. Speak with your physician or pharmacist.
Protect your lips from the sun. Use a lip balm with SPF and limit excessive sun exposure, especially if you work outdoors.
Maintain regular dental visits. Routine examinations can help identify unusual changes in the mouth early.
Signs You Should Not Ignore
Please contact our practice or your GP if you notice any of the following
These symptoms do not always mean cancer, but they should be checked promptly.
An ulcer that does not heal
A red or white patch in the mouth
A lump, thickened area, or swelling
Persistent mouth pain
Difficulty swallowing
Numbness in the lip or tongue
Loose teeth without a clear reason
A lump in the neck
What We Look For During an Oral Cancer Screening
Included in every routine examination
At Sprotbrough Dental Practice, on your routine dental examination, we check the soft tissues of the mouth, tongue, gums, cheeks, palate, and lips for changes that may need closer attention. We may also ask about lifestyle and medical risk factors to help support prevention and early detection.
When to Book an Appointment
Book an appointment if you have a persistent mouth ulcer, unusual patch, swelling, or any other change in your mouth that has lasted for more than 2 to 3 weeks. Early assessment is important.
